GUT-TIP of the WEEK: 


Boy … Paleo and pasta just don’t mix! That is … until I met Jovial Cassava Pasta that is … I’ve been eating Gluten Free pasta for YEARS. But felt the need to find something Paleo instead.


Enter Jovial … I’ve known about their other pastas but until the other day I didn’t realize they had these. I saw it at Sprouts, cooked some up and paired it with a jarred sauce (Carbone’s), Gluten Free meatballs, and Violife Parmesan (get out that cheese grater guys!)


After the very first taste, I bought a bunch more at Thrive Market. But you can also find this and other different shapes at  Amazon and Whole Foods if you have one near you.


Cassava is a starchy tuber similar to yam, taro, and sweet potato. So it’s NOT a low-carb food. But since it’s actually a root vegetable, cassava is gluten, grain and nut-free, as well as vegan, vegetarian and Paleo-friendly. 


Their site says it's also produced in a dedicated Gluten Free facility (a big deal for those of us who don’t want other grains in our food).


All that stuff is nice to have … but the bottom line is that the pasta itself just SO DAMN GOOD!

RESEARCH DEETS: 

In a world grappling with expanding waistlines 🌍📈, our gut microbiome emerges as a silent hero. The article "Gut Microbiome and Its Impact on Obesity and Obesity-Related Disorderscasts a spotlight on their starring role in our global obesity drama.

Here's the lowdown: Obesity isn't just about excess weight; it's a party host for uninvited guests like type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. These gatecrashers thrive in an out-of-sync gut 🤹‍♂️. They hijack carbs for energy, open up the gut's floodgates, and trigger inflammation.🍰🏰. This fiery concoction leads to insulin resistance and more.

But the plot twist? We can steer this ship! Through dietary choices 🥦🥕🥗 orinterventions like probiotics, we can restore our gut's balance 🤸‍♂️. The goal: quell obesity and metabolic havoc. Yet, we're navigating uncharted waters, with clinical trials charting the course ⏳🌟. One truth remains: tending to our inner ecosystem is the ultimate game-changer. 🌱💪🧬

My Gut-Take: 

OK … first let me explain the difference between a research and a review study. A research study sets up a study design and tries to prove that one thing causes another. For example, the study I noted in last week’s newsletter was a RESEARCH study.


This … however … is a REVIEW of many similar studies. So … obviously … researchers want to study this a whole lot. And the bottom line is that they found that  leaky gut leads to inflammation.


And inflammation leads to insulin resistance and weight gain. Not to mention obesity-related diseases such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.


Also … there are things called obesogens that cause the same problems. You can read about them in my article, Can Obesogens Make You Fat?.

 

So get the idea of calories in … calories out OUT of your head! There’s SOOO much more that DOESN’T meet the eye about weight gain.

SUPPLEMENT TAKES: 

DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice) is a go-to supplement for those of you who have acid reflux (GERD) … which is just about everyone … or want to heal their guts. DGL was shown in a 2014 study to promote mucus activity, which may act as a barrier to acid in the stomach and esophagus.


This mucosal barrier can allow the damaged tissue to heal and prevent future occurrences of acid reflux. A 2018 study found that DGL was more effective than acid-suppressive drugs. All I can say about that study is WOW!

 

Americans spend 2 BI[[ION DOLLARS on antacids alone every year. And this is better? Go for it!

 

A few words of caution however. You shouldn’t use licorice if you’re taking diuretics, or other medications that lower your body’s potassium levels.


People who have heart disease or high blood pressure should exercise caution too. And women who are pregnant should also avoid use.

My Gut-Take: 

I gotta tell you … if you’re one of those people that suffers from heartburn (the OLD word for GERRRRD) you need to try this! It’s my go-to every time I do. And now research backs it up.

Licorice root has a long history of use, going back to ancient Assyrian, Egyptian, Chinese, and Indian cultures. It was used traditionally for treating a variety of conditions, including lung, liver, circulatory, and kidney diseases. What did they know that we don’t?


But … a word to the wise … the candy you get … and I LOVE Twizzlers … contain NO licorice. You have to get the real stuff … and DGL is the active ingredient.


I love this brand as it’s chewable and CHOCOLATE! You can easily carry it with you just in case …
